Quando se aproxima uma
nuvem negra carregada de chuva, procuro um abrigo sob uma
rocha, se o houver, ou volto para o carro, normalmente
longe, para mudar a roupa encharcada. Para proteger o
equipamento levo um saco de plástico grande. O calçado,
quando fotografo junto ao mar (ex.: página 47), molha-se
por regra rapidamente e acabo por continuar a trabalhar
com os pés encharcados. Quando fotografo sobre a areia
molhada, o tripé desequilibrando-se gradualmente sobre o
estrato sem firmeza durante as longas exposições,
mudando objectivas e filtros da mochila às costas sem a
poder pousar, muitas vezes usando montagens caseiras
improvisadas com molas e elásticos, um olho na câmara
outro atento às ondas maiores e delas fugindo com o
material aos ombros, tudo para capturar um momento fugaz,
torna-se difícil ter o tempo e a disposição para
aplicar os conhecimentos e usar a técnica correcta. (excerto do livro) |
When a black cloud filled
with rain approaches, I seek shelter under a rock, if
there is one, or I have to return to the car, usually far
away, to change my soaked clothing. To protect my
equipment, I carry a big plastic sack. When I photograph
close to the sea (for example, page 47), my footwear gets
wet rapidly, and I end up continuing to work with soaking
feet. Sometimes when I photograph over wet sand, the
tripod gradually begins to tilt over in the sand during
long exposures at the same time that I am taking lenses
and filters from the backpack on my back without being
able to put it down (often using home-made mounts
improvised from springs and rubber bands). While I am
doing all this, I also have to keep one eye on the camera
and the other attentive to the largest waves, running
away from them with my equipment slung over my shoulder.
Going through all this in order to capture a fleeting
moment makes it difficult to have the time and the
disposition to apply one’s knowledge and to use the
