Inevitável será o pisoteio e
consequente degradação do coberto vegetal silvestre
situado entre a urbanização e a praia, o xeque-mate
para os últimos exemplares da espécie em perigo de
extinção Omphalodes kuzinskyanae. Sendo estas
espécies verdadeiro património da humanidade, como
Sintra alias o é, e estando localizadas no Parque
Natural de Sintra Cascais, muitos se interrogam sobre a
legitimidade, ou sequer a lógica, destas iniciativas.
Mas, mesmo ainda sem urbanização a Omphalodes
kuzinskyanae está a morrer. Nunca como no dia em que
fui levado a ver esta planta me apercebera da verdadeira
extensão do drama duma espécie em processo de
extinção! Os últimos representantes duma espécie que
agoniza não cobrem uns escassos metros quadrados. A
maior área coberta por esta pequena planta tem um metro
de diâmetro! Patético! Os portugueses, que deram novos
mundos ao mundo, esqueceram os mundos a seus pés. É que
as espécies, para além da utilidade que têm umas para
as outras nos ecossistemas, encerram em si segredos que
não estamos ainda preparados para compreender, as
moléculas que usaremos no futuro, codificadas no seu
DNA, uma riqueza que não podemos desperdiçar para
sempre. Cabe à civilização portuguesa salvar esta e as
outras espécies ameaçadas no seu território. E é tão
fácil!

I
t’s inevitable that these plants will be
stepped on, and the consequent degradation of the wild vegetation
between the urbanization and the beach will be the checkmate for the
last samples of a species now going extinct, Omphalodes kuzinskyanae.
Since these species are the true heritage of humanity, as Sintra is
also, and since these species are located in the Nature Park of Sintra
Cascais, many question the legitimacy, or even the logic, of these
touristic initiatives. But even without urbanization, Omphalodes
kuzinskyanae is dying. Until the day in which I was taken to see
this plant, I never fully realized the true nature of the drama of a
species in the process of extinction! The last representatives of a
species in the agony of death barely cover a few scant square meters.
The largest single area covered by this little plant has a diameter of
one meter! Pathetic! The Portuguese, who gave new worlds to the world,
have forgotten the worlds at their feet. These species, besides the
value they have for each other in their ecosystem, hide within
themselves secrets that we are not yet even capable of comprehending -
secrets held in their molecules and coded for in their DNA that we
will use one day but cannot afford to squander forever. It behooves
the Portuguese civilization to save these and other species threatened
in its territory. And it’s so easy!
